Grow a Garden 2 Mutations Explained: How They Boost Value

Grow a Garden 2 Mutations Explained: How They Boost Value
Key takeaways
  • A mutation multiplies a crop’s value: normal value × multiplier = new value.
  • Most mutations come from weather and special events while crops are growing.
  • A strong mutation can make a cheap crop worth more than a rare one.
  • Always include the mutation when you check a trade in the calculator.

Mutations are one of the most exciting parts of Grow a Garden 2. One lucky weather event can turn an ordinary crop into one of the most valuable items in your garden. But mutations are also where many players make mistakes: they sell mutated crops too cheaply or trade them away without knowing what they are worth.

This guide explains what mutations are, how they change value, how to get more of them, and how to value them when you trade.

What is a mutation?

A mutation is a special effect that appears on a crop, usually with a new color, glow or look. Each mutation has a multiplier. The higher the multiplier, the more the mutated crop is worth compared to a normal one.

You can see every mutation and its multiplier on our mutations list. Each mutation also has its own page with a table showing what the most valuable plants are worth with it.

How mutations change value

The math is simple: normal value × multiplier = mutated value.

Example numbers only. Check the mutations list for current multipliers.

That is why a common plant with a rare mutation can end up worth more than a rare plant with no mutation at all. Here is the same idea with a few example multipliers, starting from a plant worth 1,000:

MultiplierMutated value
x22,000
x55,000
x2020,000
x5050,000

On every plant page you will find a “value with mutations” table that does this math for you with real values.

How to get mutations

  • Weather events. Most mutations come from weather while your crops are still growing. You cannot choose when weather happens.
  • Special events. Limited-time events can bring their own mutations, which are often rare and valuable.
  • Pets and gear. Some pets and items may help your chances or add effects to your crops. Check each pet’s page for its ability.

Players disagree on some details, such as whether more than one mutation can stack on a single crop, and the rules can change with game updates. Our mutation list is updated when values change.

Tips to get more value from mutations

  1. Keep valuable crops planted during weather events. More time in the ground during events means more chances.
  2. Grow many plants. A full plot means more crops that can get lucky.
  3. Don’t sell a mutated crop on autopilot. Check its value first. It might be worth far more in a trade.
  4. Watch freshness. Crops can lose value if left too long. Harvest valuable mutated crops before they spoil.
  5. Protect them at night. A rare mutated crop is exactly what other players want.

Trading mutated crops

When a mutated crop is part of a trade, the normal value is not enough. In the trade calculator, add the plant and then pick its mutation from the small menu under it. The calculator multiplies the value for you, so your WIN / FAIR / LOSE result stays accurate.

Also check:

  • Is the mutation real? Look at the crop closely in the trade window.
  • Demand: some mutated crops are popular collectibles, others are mostly sold for Sheckles.
  • Freshness: a crop that is about to lose value is worth less in practice.

FAQ

What is the best mutation?

The one with the highest multiplier. See the mutations list, which is sorted from the strongest to the weakest.

Can I choose which mutation I get?

Not directly. Mutations mostly come from weather and events, which are random, so the best you can do is have many crops growing at the right time.

Do mutations work on pets?

Mutations are a crop mechanic. Pets have their own abilities instead.

Why does the same plant have different values?

Because of mutations (and sometimes size or weight). Two crops of the same plant can be worth very different amounts.
